Immigration

After the California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the law initiative Trust Act, the Head of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Charlie Beck, announced that he will change the collaboration protocol with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to avoid a deportation process of those whom committed a misdemeanor

“We will not comply with the request of detention of ICE without verifying in advance that it is a serious crime”, said Beck.

A person who was arrested by the LAPD will be delivered to immigration, explained Beck, only if he has committed a felony, has criminal background or if he is engaged with gangs.

The new collaboration protocol with ICE will be effective this January once it has been approved by the Police Commission and the City Counsel.

Beck mentioned that it is in process the creation of a list which contains several misdemeanors that do not required detention from ICE like driving without a license, selling on the streets and the prostitution.
