Criminals are Everywhere, Including Parking Lots and Garages

Parking lots/garages across the nation are high crime areas for both men and women. Women tend to be victimized more so than men, but both need to be aware of their surroundings, especially when in a parking lot/garage. There are a few things that we can do to help avoid some of the dangers of parking lots/garages.

  • Don’t allow yourself to be distracted. This is easier said than done, but do your best to avoid being on your cellphone, listening to music (with headphones), scrambling in your purse for keys, etc.
  • Have your keys in hand, ready to go before you leave for the parking lot. If you place a key between your pointer and middle finger, it can be used as a weapon if necessary.
  • Always avoid walking alone at night. Get someone you know or security personnel to walk you to your car.
  • Park in a well-lit area, and, if possible, back into parking spaces for a quick and easy exit.
  • Check your car before getting in, even if it’s just a quick glance into your backseat.
  • If you have a keyless entry, only unlock the driver’s side door.
  • Once in your vehicle, limit the time you spend idle in your car. Get in and go.

Following these few easy steps can help to prevent you from being victimized. There are many links on the internet that can provide additional advice on ways to prevent being victimized. Some of these sites also include stories and advice about how to get out of a situation should you find yourself caught off guard. http://www.crime-safety-security.com/Parking-Lot-Safety.html is one site that can provide some very useful guidance.

Often, it is hard to make these steps a daily habit or even to remember all of them. If you don’t do anything else, just simply remember to be aware of your surroundings. Know where you are and who may be in that area. If you feel it’s not safe, do something about it.
